Chic Parisian Party Cocktail: Ti’ Punch

French party cocktail ti’ punchAfter a few nights out on the town in Paris, you’ll soon start to realize that nothing really seems to get a pawty stawted like a yummy  Ti’ Punch.  Ti Punch (which is short for “petite punch” and is pronounced “Tee Pownsh”)  is a delicious rum-based cocktail which comes from the French Caribbean, but is served in homes, bars and terraces all over France.  Everyone seems to love Ti Punch, and the fact that it’s so simple to make puts it right at the top of my French Party Cocktail Menu:

Ti’ Punch

3 tbsp french Caribbean white rum
1 tsp sugar syrup
1 lime
Cut the lime into 4 wedges. Put them into the glass. Pound and crush them with a blunt rounded object until the juices have fully released. Leave the them in the glass. Add the syrup and the rum. Add plenty of ice and your done. Serve.

Now, I’ve been told that the authentic way to serve Ti’ Punch is to give your guests all of the ingredients in small bowls and have them prepare their own. I’ve also noticed that some places will serve Ti’ Punch with only one or 2 ice cubes, or sometimes none at all. I don’t know if that’s because the French have that weird aversion to ice, or if the drink is supposed to be served that way. Me, I prefer my Ti’ Punch icy-cold with heaps of ice. Enjoy!

In the French caribbean they have a delightful habit of bringing all the ingredients to your table and leaving you the bottle of rum.

It sounds a little like a Mojito with the mint leaves forgotten. But I’m going to try this one for sure. With ice…
