girl’s week-end in paris - jewelry atelier

Laurie from The Paris Blog was here in Paris this past spring, looking to add some French techniques to her jewelry-making skills. She was surprised to find that one-day workshops or short-duration jewelry making classes are pretty hard to come by- until she found her way to La Petite Manufacture in the 11th arrondissement.  I saw this and thought that this funky little atelier would make such a cool addition to a bachelorette weekend in Paris.  A great way to occupy the girls- at least until the sun goes down. Here’s an excerpt from Laurie’s post:

I finally landed on La Petite Manufacture, a jewelry boutique in the 11th arrondissement with a sizable studio in back. The owner, Marie, gives courses on Fridays and Saturdays when not tending to the store and making her own creations. A look around the place and you know you’re in capable hands: besides Marie’s own jewelry, which is whimsical and well made, there’s a kiln; a wall of drawers for materials from stamps to glues to silver metal paste; and, on the large wood workbench, jars of scissors, colored pencils, and dentist tools.

The 3-hour, one-off classes cost 45 to 60 euros and range in subject from beading to metal paste to Murano-style glass-making. Students are provided with all the materials they need, and can also select from the boutique in front. In yesterday’s beading course, for instance, I “shopped” for ribbon, clasps, beads, wire, and fancy embroidery thread.

The real value of the class is in Marie. Patient and encouraging, she leaves the students enough free range to find their own way after ample instruction. She speaks English, in case your French is a little shaky and you need a few words translated (“melaxer” means “squish,” I learned).

french wedding traditions: lily-of-the-valley

kate-middleton-lily-bouquetWell, the Wedding of the Century has come and gone, and everyone seems to have an opinion on, well, everything about it- including Kate Middleton’s Lily-of-the-Valley bridal bouquet.  I, for one, thought it was perfect- stylish, discrete, traditional yet modern at the same time. I also think it’s charming that she would carry Lily-of-the Valley with her wedding date so close to May 1st, which is when the French celebrate spring by offering small sprigs of muguet (Lilies of the Valley) as a porte bonheur (good luck charm) to those who hold a special place in their hearts. Since May 1st is the only time of the year when people can sell flowers on the street without having to buy a permit, for the past few days, all over Paris, people could be found selling little bunches of Lilies-of-the-Valley for a euro or two.

This sweet French custom started during the 16th Century.  Wedding banns were posted at the beginning of May, and wreaths of lily-of-the-valley were hung in the doorways of the brides-to-be. During his reign, Charles IX also began offering sprigs of muguet for luck. As it happened, in the late 1800s, the international workers movement declared the first of May as May Day, in honor of the workers of the world. In France, workers and their supporters wore lily-of-the-valley boutonnières on May 1st. These days, French tradition says that you must offer au moins un brin de muguet (”at least one sprig of Lily of the Valley”) to loved ones on May Day. In the Victorian language of flowers, by the way, lily-of-the-valley signified the return of happiness.

For a spring or summer wedding, what better way to incorporate this French tradition into your wedding than by adding some touches of Lilies-of the Valley?

If you’d like to add more of a French touch to your lily-of-the-valley wedding, try offering your guests boxes of Muguet-flavored macarons,  or your bridesmaids bottles of  muguet-scented Parisian perfume.

marry me! new fragrance from lanvin paris

Lanvin’s new fresh and flirty fragrance, Marry Me! premiered this week, and promises to be the “it” scent for this fall. One look at their adorable commercial, and I’m guessing that les futures mariées (brides-to-be ) around the world are probably already lining up around the corner. Oh, and for you guys- try slipping a bottle of this into her overnight as you’re trekking across Europe. Can you think of a more perfect way to pop the question?
