paris wedding trend 2012: vintage antique lace

I stopped by the Salon du Mariage at the Carrousel du Louvre over the week-end to find out what’s on the radar for French wedding fashion trends for 2012.  First, I have to say that this year’s salon did seem a bit more, well… meager than in years’ past.  I expected to see some of the classic vendors that had been staples of the Salon - designers like Ana Quasoar and Cherry Chau, or fabulous florals by Varda.  While some of the bigger key players were still on hand-  Pronovias and Rosa Clara, for example, I actually didn’t see any florists at all!  Jean-Luc Blaise created his customary over-the-top, blinged out opening tablescape- but even it seemed a bit rehashed. In fact, this year’s tablescape looked suspiciously like 2009’s tablescape- just with an overlay change, non?

The theme of this years Salon was “Noces de Dentelle” - Lace Wedding, and it was reflected throughout the exhibit space and  runway shows. The runway show itself was a bit, um… eclectic. It opened with a gospel sing-a-long (note to gospel groups: the French don’t really seem to go for sing-a-longs…) and above all else, seemed to illustrate the fact that one can go high or low with a lace wedding dress.

Inspired by the theme as well as the current trend, there was a much heavier emphasis on vintage and antique-inspired gowns this year. Some of the finest lace in the world comes from France, and this salon was the perfect vehicle for French lace-makers to strut their stuff.  Their work was absolutely beautiful, and at times the Salon felt more like a museum exhibition than a wedding fair-  so many of the dresses were near works of art. Having a chance to see this level of handiwork up close was such  a rare opportunity, but I think I was happiest to have been able to discover some Parisian wedding dress designers that may have been over-shadowed in the past by their more high-profile colleagues.

I think the take-away from the 2012 Salon du Mariage at the Carrousel du Louvre was that Paris still reigns supreme as far as wedding gown craftsmanship and artistry is concerned- but I think I may be preaching to the choir on that one, n’est-ce pas?

letterpress stationery in paris

I’ve always found it a little surprising that  letterpress stationery was so hard to come by in Paris.  While you can find options for good quality customizable wedding invitations in any number of papeteries around Paris, the hip and stylish contemporary letterpress suites that are de rigueur on today’s American bridal and social scene just haven’t been on the radar in France. Until now.

Enter Paper + Cup Design, a New York-based stationery and graphic design company headed by husband and wife team, Minhee and Thomas Cho.  Paper + Cup specializes in letterpress invitations, note cards, journals and gift tags, with products sold through their design studio, online shop,  as well as in over 250 stores across the U.S.  When their designer, Sarah, decided to move back to her native Paris, they jumped at the opportunity to go global- and had her bring the innovative, modern, vintage-esque designs of Paper + Cup with her.  Minhee says, “We get inquiries on a regular basis from International brides as well as for many destination weddings. Our brides shared with us that there were limited stationers with the aesthetic that they are wanting from where they live. So this idea to go abroad has been stewing in our hearts for a long time.  So when we met Sarah, it was as if fate had intervened.  She’s our authentic French touch and the reason why we are able to open up shop in Paris.”

With the launch of their new bilingual French/English blog, Paper+Cup Sketchbook, and their soon-to-be-launched Paris (and London!) online shops, European and  destination brides can now add fresh and fun letterpress stationery to their wedding planning wish lists.

la fete de la musique and a romantic picnic in paris

Here’s a vintage parisian party post from a few years back which fills you in on  la Fête de la Musique:

June 21st  is la  Fête de la Musique- World Music Day, where most of Europe enjoys a day of fun, sun (hopefully) and free live music. The holiday, which actually started here in France in the 80’s, always falls on June 21st, the summer solstice, and is a chance for both professional and amateur entertainers to strut their stuff. On the Fête de la Musique, everyone seems to be in a happy mood (really- even in Paris!!), and there’s music literally at every turn.  My favorite spots in Paris for Fete de la Musique are Palais Royale (where a lot of opera singers choose to sing because of the awesome acoustics under the arches) and Place Vendôme.  Even though it falls on a week day this year, lots of people will take advantage anyway and spend the whole day out wandering the streets, listening to music and picnicking in the park.

Why don’t you celebrate your own Fête de la Musique this weekend, even if you don’t live in a country that “officially” recognizes the need for more music in the streets? A maxi sundress and a big floppy hat will help you get into that Parisian mood. Pack up a wheel of stinky cheese, some fruit, a baguette and maybe a bottle of sparkling French Lemonade. Toss it all in a basket, grab your boules set, your ipod and speakers- and you’re ready to go! Vive la musique!
