OK, I know the “embarrassing song game” was all about last week, but I have one more confession to make, although this is about a show, and not just a song. I’m totally hooked on Nouvelle Star, which is the French version of “American Idol”. Now before you go clicking over to You Tube to check it out, let me just say that I know that Nouvelle Stars may seem to be a bit amateurish compared to American Idol, but you have to look at it culturally: America is the birthplace of most popular music styles: blues, gospel, rock and roll, country and western, etc. Many American kids are singing in their church choir practically as soon as they can talk, and half of those are “triple threats” by the time they get out of junior high school. In France, I feel that academics takes precedence over the arts, but even still, there are some pretty talented young people throwing it down “Frenchie Style” every Wednesday night on M6 (unlike it’s American counterpart, French Idol only comes on once a week- I think that’s about enough, non?).
This year, our house is divided between Amandine, a sort of Courtney Love meets Amy Winehouse-but-without-the-hair pop singer (my husbands vote), and Benjamin, a sexy-n-seventeen (18, tops!), dead-ringer-for-James-Dean soul singer (my vote, oh-la-la-a-a-ahh!!) We were united on our extreme dislike of Kristov, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that he was finally voted off last night. Sorry, Kristov. For the rest of you: Votez Benjamin!!!
