Whether you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve on the Champs Elysees in Paris, or with a small group of friends chez toi, if you’ve planned it right, chances are you’re going to wake up with one heck of a gueule de bois (hangover) come Friday morning. What better way to Frenchify your New Year than with a Bloody Mary? Bet you didn’t know that this All-American cure-all was invented in Paris, did you?  The Bloody Mary was first created in 1920 by bartender Fernand Petiot at the original Harry’s New York Bar in Paris.  Here’s the original recipe from a 1967 Newsweek interview with the late Mr. Petiot himself:

le bloody mary

Cover the bottom of a cocktail shaker with 4 large dashes of salt
2 dashes of black pepper
2 dashes of cayenne pepper
and 1 layer of Worcestershire sauce.
Add a dash of lemon and crushed ice.
Pour in 2 oz of 100-proof vodka and 2 oz of extra-thick tomato juice.
Shake, strain and pour.

When in Paris, be sure to stop into Harry’s New York Bar at 5, rue Daunou (Sank Roo Doe Noo, as the sign says) in the 2nd Arrondissement for a little taste of American history in Paris.

Until next time- Bonne Année and Meilleurs Voeux for 2010!
