Delphine Manivet is one of my favorite French wedding dress designers. Her dresses range from hip and cool to romantic and ethereal and touch everywhere in between. A visit to her boutique on Faubourg Saint-Honoré is such a girlie pick-me-up, but sort of nostalgic at the same time “If I could do it all over again, I would definitely wear the “clement”….or would I pick the “théodore”? Hmmm. Indeed, we’ll never know…”
It always feels kind of funny to me when I visit bridal salons as a married woman with children back at home. It’s kind of like going out on a bachelorette night with a bunch of single girls, or bringing a toddler into the Sephora on the Champs Elysées. You’re suddenly keenly aware of a completely different universe that runs parallel to yours that has absolutely nothing to do with the world you’re living in. So little, in fact, that neither universe even pretends to acknowledge the existence of the other. If the two universes do happen to overlap every now and then, each one just shakes it off like a weird dream or a case of deja vu or something.
Anyway, I was flipping through a magazine, and saw this ad for Delphine Manivet. My first reaction was, “Oo, pretty dress, but I’m not really feeling that ruffle”. But my second was, “Huh?” You have this beautiful yet aloof bride, with her hand on an antique baby carriage that’s been draped in some sort of lace shawl. The woman is looking at the baby (or towards the baby, at least) and is showing absolutely no emotion what-so-ever. Not happy or sad or wistful or…anything! I can’t figure out what they’re trying to say with this ad, or why it would compel one of the brides in the other universe to run out and buy a wedding dress. I really don’t get it! So, I started playing “Guess the Caption” and thought I would see if anyone in either of the universes would care to join in. I’ll start:
“Um, yeah- I don’t care WHO your daddy is, the invitation clearly said Adults Only”

tee hee- Anyone else?
